Major Accomplishments

Raya Haffar El Hassan is a Lebanese politician who has been appointed as the Minister of Interior and Municipalities in the 3rd Government of Prime Minister Saad Hariri. She is the first Minister to be appointed in such a post in Lebanon and the Arab world.

Before her appointment, she served as the chairman – general manager of the Special Economic Zone Of Tripoli (TSEZ) from 2015 till January 2019. El Hassan previously served as the Lebanese Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2011. Prior to this appointment, she worked on reform programs under the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank. She was also an Advisor to the Minister of Economy and Trade and later worked as a member of the Office of the Prime Minister, leading different donor funded projects supervising expenditure management reforms. 

In 2016, El Hassan served on the advisory board of the Arab Human Development Report. She is a member of the board of directors at MedInvestment Bank, Saudi Lebanese Bank and Bank Med.sal where she also serves at the audit committee. El Hassan received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the American University of Beirut (AUB) in 1987. She then obtained an MBA in Finance in Investments from George Washington University in 1990.
