Major Accomplishments

Dr. Sawsan Majali earned her Ph.D. in nursing from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1991. After completing her Ph.D., Majali joined the University of Jordan’s Faculty of Nursing in Amman. From 1993-1995, she served as the Deputy Dean and Chairwoman of the Clinical Nursing Department, and from 1991-2003, as Assistant Professor of Nursing. Over the years, Majali has published several articles and chapters in her areas of interest such as women's health, youth, and the elderly, and has supervised many masters and doctoral students. During this time, in 1995, she also became a member of the WHO Global Advisory Group on Nursing and Midwifery, WHO Regional Advisory Group on Nursing and Midwifery, Eastern Mediterranean Region; the latter in which she continues to serve today.
In 2002 Majali became Director of the Nursing Program at Dar Al Hekma College, in collaboration with King Faisal Specialist Hospital (KFSH), in Saudi Arabia where she remained until 2010. In 2003, she was also an associate professor at the University of Jordan Nursing College. For much of 2010, Majali also held the role of Consultant at the Al Riyadah College for Health Sciences.

Majali returned to Jordan in 2010 where she became Director for the Queen Zein Al Sharaf Institute for Development (ZENID), and Deputy Executive Director for Strategic Planning of the Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD), where she established the early childhood and disability program and supervised the Oxfam Regional Project for Women Economic Empowerment at ZENID. In 2013, she assumed the position of the Secretary General of the Higher Population Council. In 2016, she was elected to the Jordanian Senate, where she is the Chair of the Senate Labor and Development Committee. She has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Center for Human Rights, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Council for Family Affairs in Jordan.
