MIFTAH was established in Jerusalem in 1998 as an independent Palestinian civil society institution that seeks to promote the principles of democracy and good governance within various components of Palestinian society; it further seeks to engage local and international public opinion and official circles on the Palestinian cause. To that end, MIFTAH adopts the mechanisms of an active and in-depth dialogue, the free flow of information and ideas, as well as local and international networking. Thus, MIFTAH has been working towards its vision of a sovereign, independent, democratic, tolerant and inclusive Palestinian state, which grants Palestinians their basic rights, preserves their dignity, and enjoys international recognition and respect from two strategic angles; enhancing good governance in Palestine and strengthening national unity and international awareness of the Palestinian narrative.
Furthermore, and within its first strategic focus, MIFTAH works towards advancing policy advocacy and lobbying to ensure social justice and equality as one pillar of good governance. Within this context, MIFTAH holds policy development forums, fosters dialogue, and actively participates in advocating sound legislations to overcome the barriers facing marginalized groups within the Palestinian society with a special focus on women and youth.
Additionally, within its second strategic focus, MIFTAH exerts its efforts to strengthen national unity and international awareness of the Palestinian Narrative through the promotion of the Palestinian narrative at the global level through hosting international delegations, conducting briefings and discussion sessions and holding meetings with diplomatic missions with focus on the Palestinian right to self-determination. Moreover, MIFTAH focuses on reviving the national internal dialogue on timely political issues through holding policy dialogue sessions to enhance multichannel communication among all sectors of society, including political leaders, government, and civil-society organizations.
