PIONEERS & LEADERS Knowledge Center About Arab Women
This Knowledge Center acknowledges the advancement of Arab women’s progress.
It aims to break stereotypes and support the empowerment of women & their allies.
It is designed for knowledge seekers: women, men, policy makers, NGOs, research institutes, business people, international development agencies, students and the media, among others.
The Arab Institute for Women (AiW), formerly known as the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW), operates under the auspices of the Lebanese American University (LAU). The Institute was established in 1973 to pay tribute to LAU’s history as a school for girls and to honor its legacy of women's education. At that time, it was the first academic institute globally to focus exclusively on women.
The research in this Knowledge Center is about the intersection of gender with other socioeconomic sectors such as education, health, the legal system, political engagement and participation, the labor force, early marriage, and gender-based violence. This knowledge center synthesizes quantitative and qualitative studies by Arab researchers and international researchers, (women and men), as well as research organizations both in the Arab world and internationally. The synthesis of our research continues to be a work in progress.
